Reuters reported that San Francisco-based Volantis raised $88 million in venture capital. Its design replaces short-reach electrical links with laser light and, the company says, could connect as many as 220 memory chips around one GPU.

Volantis plans to use vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, components already produced at large scale for consumer-device sensing. Chief executive Tapa Ghosh said the company aims to deliver a chip next year; the product and performance claims remain unproven in commercial deployment.
