BMW announced an expansion of image and sensor-data collection from compatible customer vehicles in EU member states. The company says participation requires customer consent and recordings are triggered by specified events, supporting development of driver-assistance and partially automated functions.
From mid-September, individual recordings may last up to 120 seconds. BMW describes removing vehicle identifiers after transmission and obscuring faces and number plates before authorized staff view recordings where technically possible. It also permits unaltered recordings for machine learning, so this should not be read as a claim that all data is anonymized at collection.
