ESA said the Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 satellite reached its designated geostationary orbit roughly 36,000 kilometres above Earth, 12 days after launching on Ariane 6 on August 27. MTG-I2 joins MTG-I1 and the MTG-S1 sounder, completing the first three-satellite family.

Reaching orbit is a deployment milestone rather than the start of operational weather service. Eumetsat is beginning commissioning, during which controllers and instrument teams must verify the spacecraft before its data can enter forecasting systems.
