An image released by ESA on September 8 shows the plume from Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano on September 5. The agency describes a high-altitude white plume of volcanic gases and lower brown clouds containing ash and debris.
Sentinel-3’s Ocean and Land Colour Instrument captured the view. The instrument measures 21 spectral bands at 300-metre spatial resolution, supporting monitoring of oceans, vegetation, aerosols and clouds. ESA reports that the eruption began on September 4.
