The A$5.6 billion airport at Badgerys Creek is about 60 kilometres west of central Sydney. Unlike the existing airport, it can operate around the clock; Jetstar was scheduled to run the first outbound passenger flight to the Gold Coast.
The airport says it can eventually handle more than 80 million passenger movements a year. Cargo operations began in July, while the 1,780-hectare site was bought by the federal government in the 1980s and construction was completed in July 2025.
