American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines said they were reducing planned capacity as higher jet-fuel prices weakened the economics of marginal routes. American estimated that the latest fuel increase would add about $1 billion to its fourth-quarter costs.
United had removed some December flights and said additional adjustments could follow in 2027. Southwest had already cut its planned 2026 capacity growth roughly in half. Executives nevertheless described demand and bookings as resilient, so the changes are a cost response rather than evidence of a broad travel collapse.
